My memories of Little Bay go back to my childhood, and yet still, in my late sixties, I lay down rich new ones. These recollections are in constant flux as I immerse myself in the water there, take photos of the beach at different tides and weather, walk the dog and watch the whales from the golf courses. I know the well-worn pathways, the rock pools and the dangerous rock platforms, as well as my favourite spot to swim at high tide. As I enjoy these moments, memories drift in and out … I recall being fascinated by Christo wrapping the coast in 1969; marrying at the cute, ocean-facing chapel in 1979; floating in the rock pools during COVID; and the recent horror of an ocean swimmer being eaten by a shark. So much is encapsulated in a memory – emotion, vision, sound, and smell.

I have enjoyed trying to encapsulate my memories in these 13 pinched and manipulated forms. The stoppers have mostly been collected at Little Bay, and are used to echo either the lines of the sgraffito and carved surfaces or the stories told by the material itself – rusty metal, concrete, rope and driftwood.
